Most children who are learning to eat love to make a mess, but using baby dishes can teach a child to keep their food on their plate or in their bowl and learn how to eat like an adult. All dishes that baby uses should be plastic, since glass dishes can easily be broken when baby is making a mess. Dishes with compartments also work great for young children, since it allows them to keep their food separated so they can choose what they would like to eat.

 

Utensils are very important once baby is learning how to eat alone, without help from mom or dad. Baby utensils can be introduced once the child is about a year old, but most children don’t become pros until they are about 18 months old. All baby utensils used by children should be childproof, meaning there should not be any loose parts or parts that can break easily. Large handles that can be easily held are also a good idea, since it can be hard to use utensils that are small at first. Children should only use a spoon and a fork, since even a dull butter knife can injure a small child.
